So remember our Super Bowl party celebrating Mr. Lowe's birthday? Well, I didn't want to tell you, but tragedy struck. One of my home decor pride and joys took a tumble and was decimated. Don't worry, it wasn't Ryno the Rhino. But it was another bright white ceramic friend. I was on the cusp of a home decor trend, and I had to sweep it up and dump it in my trashcan.
But, my dear Ryan immediately ordered a replacement (for those of you keeping score, it wasn't he who killed the deer, lucky for him!). Unfortunately, probably due to my post, the dang thing was backordered until late March. Being a trendsetter can be such a burden sometimes.
Well, guess what? It's late March. And guess what I cam home to this week?
Sweet sweet victory. It's like he never left.

Tweakin' Weekend
Unfortunately, I spent most of the past week at home suffering through 18" of snow and closed schools. I usually enjoy every season as it comes, but I've really had about enough snow. So of course, as soon as I could, I exited Chateau Lowe and went shopping for some fun, hopefully cheap, and minor home tweaks this weekend. We decided to take a weekend off from major changes like painting and updating our bathrooms (and living room...I hadn't told you about that one yet!), so I was able to spend my time looking for art and accessories to fill voids.
My girlfriend Lindsey and I both spotted these awesome frames at Pier One. Score!! I took the glass and back off so that they just come off as artwork rather than frames. Our living rooms is a little framed-picture-heavy as it is, so these take up some space and add some interest in a slightly different way. [And note to self, I need to angle these pictures better so that everything doesn't look like I have a ton of wall showing. These rather nicely fill a gap in the living room, but you can't tell from this picture!] Please notice the new soft silvery blue walls - Lotus Leaf by my favorite paint brand, Behr Utlra. Maybe I'm turning into a boring old grown-up after all, but I love this color. It sets off the gorgeous floors Ryan installed a few years ago and makes the white trim and accents pop.
I also happened to drop by the Habitat For Humanity ReStore where you can get great home appliances, furniture, windows, light fixtures, globes, cabinets...you name it for super cheap. And 100% of the proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity - what could be better?? Anyway, I snatched about 4 picture frames for a grand total of $1.75 for my new hallway art. I sprayed all of them a glossy white, threw in some frames I already had, and voila! I need to go back and grab a few more, but this is a great start (and for $1.75 for frames and $3 for spray paint...so delightfully thrifty!).
I also happened upon this little bowl at Pier One for $2.50. He needs some books to sit on, but I had to grab him when I saw him!
And here's my most favorite tweak, some new art for the kitchen! We'd had a rather large shelf with a nice hodge podge of items in the kitchen for some time, but it sort of blocked a doorway. In this glorious but tiny house, we need all the space we can get! So knowing that a major kitchen repaint is going to be underway next weekend, I decided to begin the redecorating process and remove the shelf, disperse its contents throughout the house, and consider replacements. Of course artwork would be our best bet given the space issue. I can be a Goldilocks when shopping for artwork (too big, too small, too colorful, too plain, too expensive), but when I happened upon this DIY artwork project at my sorority sister Cara's blog Live the Home Life (fast becoming a HUGE favorite and great source of inspiration for me), I thought, "I love those and I can so do that." I grabbed some 24x24 canvases at Jo Ann's along with some paint and go to work. Cara's are black, but I decided to throw some grey in for a slightly different twist. TAAAA DAAAAAA!!! Love them - so easy and intentionally imperfect, meaning impossible for an art dummy like me to screw up.
Minor tweaking, filling up walls, and bringing it all together on this finally warm weekend. Hope you had a good one!!

Dear TJ Maxx,
While I can't seem to find your cheap discounted, chic clothes that all of my friends seem to have, I salute you. For approximately every fourth time I darken your door, you give me affordable, adorable home decor. I can ignore how finicky you are, how you sometimes don't have anything but ugly, old, broken junk. Because you quite surprise me at least once a month.
Wowza. These things were $15 apiece, and I bet at any other store (including you, Target, my fickle friend) these babies would have been $30+ apiece. I got those about 2 months ago to flank my fireplace and I am quite happy. Last night, I swung by TJ to study some decor for the new master bath makeover, and low and behold...
A white ceramic artichoke? Must. Have. I snatched this bad boy up and hugged it to my chest as we finished perusing the aisles. Good grief I love artichokes, and I love white accessories. He's now sitting on the side board in our dining nook, gleaming. Ryan questioned me buying him - Mr. I-like-one-room-done-before-I-move-to-another. "If it doesn't go in the master bath, why are we even buying it??" My husband does not understand how shopping at TJ Maxx works. When you find a gem like this, you have to leap on it. Next time you go, it'll just be a giant motorcycle statue.
Recycled glass jugs - $15 each at TJ |
$10 at TJ. Not kidding. |
Anyone else get some good TJ swag lately? Or maybe you're one of my friends who can find their elusive, trendy clothes? Jealous.
Edited "cheap" to "discounted" to please the masses. No need to offend one of my readers who is obviously an excellent TJ Maxx clothing shopper! Maybe she will reveal herself and take me to teach me how she does it?

Fauxidermy
As we established here, I have a penchant for weird decor items in my house. And I struggle with constantly putting the same things on my wall: picture of family, art, picture of family, art. Repeat. So how excited am I that there is a new, weird trend in wall art. Taxidermy!
Okay, this ain't your grandpappy's taxidermy. I'm talking chic conversation starters in your living room like these:
Aren't these fabulous? What a creative, chic, animal-friendly way to add some conversation-starting wall art to your house! I showed this trend to Mr. Lowedown and he scoffed at it. He then suggested I buy a real deer head and spray paint it. I feel like he might be expressing some frustration with my spray painting obsession of late. Regardless, as I generally do, I won. Please meet our newest addition to the in-progress living room redo:
This little guy is from my favorite home decor shop Z Gallerie. Don't worry, I've already got the ram and the rhino in my shopping cart. Just waiting on the go-ahead from the big guy. Who is now on board. Told you I always win.

Whining for Rhino
So soon after I confessed that I sucked at something, I'm going to let you in on another secret: I'm copying someone. And I have a new obsession. And these two things go hand in hand.
You see, my dear friend Lindsey tuned me in to a blog done by a young couple with great home decor skills (and a knack for cheap and easy DIY projects) called Young House Love. Although I could probably not be further apart from this couple in taste, color palette, and spending habits, their design aesthetic really spoke to me in a few ways. The main one? I lack white in my life.
I am a big fan of bold colors and jewel tones. But this blogging couple is my polar opposite - the majority of their house is done in shades of white. Given the zoo that is my house with four animals, one kindergartner, and one big Ryan, that's pretty much out of the question for me. I love the look in theory, but for us it just doesn't feel functional.
But man oh man, do I love their white accents. White animals, white bowls, white vases. White is the new teal for me. And if you know me, you know that's saying something.
Once I saw this rhino in their living room, I knew it was the perfect weird accessory for my house. The blog credited the fabulous Z Gallerie for this spectacular little find. Of course I called immediately (he was under $30!!), but the nice lady at the call center let me know that he was discontinued. My heart fell. I don't think I slept well that night. I spent most of the evening on various sites trying to locate a similar rhino (for less than $3000, please). This search went on for weeks and weeks to no avail. I may or may not have called the Z Gallerie outlet about 100 times asking them to check for one. They never would, it is against their policy.
I then decided I would do something I would never ever do. Even my mom was shocked. I decided to go....antiquing. Yes, I said it. I decided to go see if some old lady with a booth at a crap store bought a Z Gallerie rhino and then decided to sell him. Or to see if there was a rhino of any color anywhere that I could paint white. After subjecting myself and my family and friends to hours of perusing old glassware, records, and metal signs, I was still rhino-less. [And I actually love antiquing, much to my mother's surprise. I just wanted to sound cool all those years.] I was starting to give up. Maybe I would like the Betta fish? Maybe I would prefer a Buddha? But no white rhino for me.
Enter Ryan. And please remember when I told you Ryan is good at getting people to give him things. He became a fan of Z Gallerie on Facebook, then posted on their wall informing them that I had been searching everywhere for this rhino and that he needed one. They responded in 12 hours, telling him that the YHL rhino was discontinued (as was their newer version) but that they had tracked one of the newer rhinos down for him. Less than 5 days later, I found this little gem boxed up on our front porch at lunch:

Oh yes. Be jealous. That's my white ceramic rhino. His arrival was exciting enough for me to text coworkers and tell them I would not be returning to work that day. I simply wanted to stare at him.
There was great debate in the house as to where "Ryano the Rhino" (name courtesy Rlowe) should call home. But for once the hubs won and he sits proudly on the dresser in the master bedroom where he watches me sleep and is completely out of the way of small children, goofy boys, and clumsy people. Ginger is the only risk I see here, so fingers crossed she continues to be afraid of the decorative sticks behind him and keeps off the dresser entirely.
So what do you think? Great conversation piece? Love the quirky decor? Fine for me but not for you? Or just plain hate my rhino? You know what, I don't care. I'm literally obsessed with him and there's nothing you can say to convince me otherwise.
Now's the time to give HUGE props to my main man Ryan for hunting down the rhino no matter how weird he thought it was. Love you!
